It sits idly thru almost the entire game until it is used in the final dungeon. It isn't completely useless before that tho. Having the lute makes sure that you don't blindly waste any potions or houses if you happen to push the A button too many times. The final dungeon houses a stone plate just as the Earth Cave does. The Lute functions exactly like the rod. The Lute actually has the same name in the Japanese version while most items have different names. A Lute is a musical instrument resembling a small guitar.
