They restore 30 HP to a warrior when used outside of battle on the NES version, or a random amount when used in battle or any time on the WSC/PSX. It's a good idea to keep several on hand. They return in every later Final Fantasy and usually have better versions called High Potions, X-Potions, or Mega Potions. They have been translated as Heal, Cure, and Tonic in some games.
