Along with the Fighter and White Mage, the Black Mage is in most of the most popular parties. He can cast most black magic spells and learn spell levels faster than the Red Mage. The Black Mage is an expert at killing. He can wipe out a whole group of enemies in a single spell, or make the Fighter more powerful.

In the Japanese version the Black Mage is called "kuromajutsushi"  , which seems to mean Black Magician. I think Black Mage is close enough. The Black Mage is based on the Wizard class from Dungeons & Dragons. While the name Black Mage is used in the English versions of later games, they're actually Black Wizards. This is often because the Black Wizards in most games look more like the Black Mage than this game's Black Wizard.

The Black Wizard is an okay upgrade from the Black Mage. He can cast all black spells and get a couple of decent pieces of equipment.

The Black Wizard is called "kuromadoushi"  in the Japanese version, which pretty much means the same thing. They appear in FF3, FF5, FF10-2, FF11, Tactics and the Chocobo games, and there are NPC Black Wizards in FF4 and FF9. FF4's Palom, FF9's Vivi, and FF10's Lulu are Black Wizards. FF8's Edea could also be considered a Black Wizard.
